Following is the order that you should observe when going on a binge-watching session for the X-Men franchise:
1. X-Men: First Class (Set In 1960s)
Set at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, the movie tells the backstories of Professor Xavier and Magento, of how they discovered their powers and how they formed the X-Men, along with the origin of their rival group, the Brotherhood of Mutants.
And how amidst the cold war era the X-Men successfully deescalate the nuclear war tension.
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past (Set In 1970s)
In the dystopian future, the mutants are being hunted by Sentinels (created by man to destroy all the mutants).
Desperate, a small band of remaining X-Men decides to send Wolverine back in time to stop Bolivar Trask from creating the Sentinels.
The story then focuses on how Wolverine assembles the young X-Men in order to stop the dystopian future, altering the timeline.
From this point onwards, the story separates into two timelines.
Prime Timeline
1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The movie starts with Wolverine’s childhood of how trauma induces mutation in him. Wolverine flees with his half-brother Victor (who also possesses almost similar mutant abilities).
While serving the army they are recruited by Major William Stryker in Team X, but Wolverine leaves the team and settles down with his girlfriend.
But Stryker has other plans, on realizing mutant’s potential he plans on creating an ultimate genetically engineered Mutant for which he must gather every mutant’s DNA.
2. X-Men
The first film (by the order of release date) in the X-Men franchise, the movie opens up in a world where people have developed certain mutations in their body, called mutants, that have superhuman abilities.
Two mutants, Rogue and Wolverine, find themselves amidst conflict between two groups of mutants, one led by Professor Charles Xavier known as X-Men, and other led by Magneto known as Brotherhood of Mutants.
Both have polar different views on how to bring about acceptance of mutants in the world.
3. X2: X-Men United
Colonel Stryker leads an attack on Professor Xavier’s school in order to take control of Cerebro (a machine developed by Professor Xavier that can help him extend his mental powers manyfold) and kill all the mutants.
But the events lead to X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants working together in order to avert the genocide of mutant race.
4. X-Men: The Last Stand
Worthington Labs has successfully developed a cure for mutants that would suppress their powers permanently.
In fear of forceful extermination of mutants, the Brotherhood of Mutants reunites to fight against the cure.
The Brotherhood discovers that Jean Grey, a member of X-Men who allegedly lost her life in X2 while saving the others, has returned but ‘Phoenix’ , an extremely powerful but dark alternate personality of Jean Gray has become dominant.
The brotherhood plans on using Phoenix to eliminate humans while X-Men must save the world.
5. The Wolverine
The guilt of Jean Gray’s death forces Wolverine to live a life of self-exile in Japan. There he meets an old friend, Ichiro, who warns him about the threat looming over his family and wants Wolverine’s healing ability so that he can live longer.
Wolverine refuses and Ichiro dies the next day. At Ichiro’s funeral, the Yakuza kidnaps Ichiro’s granddaughter Mariko, whom Wolverine must rescue.
During the rescue, Wolverine comes across Dr. Green, a mutant, and Silver Samurai who wants Wolverine’s healing abilities. The confrontation reveals Ichiro to be the Silver Samurai, who he must defeat.
Alternate Timeline
1. X-Men: Apocalypse
After altering the timeline in Days of Future Past, the present also changes. En Sabah Nur, a powerful mutant known as Apocalypse that has been entombed alive since 3600 BC, awakens and wants to remake the world.
The X-Men must band together and try to stop the apocalypse and save the world.
2. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
The movie tells the tale of Hean Gray’s transformation and the origin of ‘Phoenix’. Amidst a rescue mission, Jean is hit by a powerful cosmic ray that she absorbs.
The cosmic rays enhance her mutant powers while resurfacing childhood trauma memories that Professor Xavier had repressed in order to help her.
As her emotions and powers gradually spiral to instability, she becomes a threat to the world
3. Deadpool (2016)
A dishonorably discharged soldier, Wade Wilson, who now works as a mercenary finds love and settles down.
But soon he is diagnosed with terminal cancer and leaves his spouse so that she doesn’t have to watch him die.
Wade is recruited by Ajax who offers him an experimental cure by activating his mutant genes.
The cancer is cured but it leaves Wade disfigured.
Wade decides to track Ajax in order to give him the cure for his disfigurement so that he can return to his spouse, in the process becoming an anti-hero.
4. Deadpool 2 (2018)
For 2 years Deadpool has been fighting organized crime, but one day a counterattack on his home leaves his wife dead. In her memory, Wade decides to join X-Men.
On a mission, he meets an orphan Russell (also known as a firefist) at an orphanage who wants to kill the abusive orphanage headmaster.
But they are attacked by Cable, a soldier from the future who has traveled back in time to kill Russell as Russell’s revenge causes him to become a killer and he kills Cable’s family.
Wade decides to save Russell and help him change his mind and alter the future.
5. The New Mutants (2020)
5 teenagers are brought to a hospital, headed by Dr. Reyes after they have accidentally caused or experienced a tragedy.
The teenagers believe that they are being trained to join X-Men.
But soon abnormal happenings force the teenagers into finding out the truth and digging deeper into their facility that they must escape.
6. Logan (Set in 2029)
No mutant has been born for the past 25 years, aging Logan suffers from failing healing ability and takes care of ailing 90 years old Professor Xavier, who is suffering from dementia and suffers from destructive seizures.
Logan comes across Laura, a genetically engineered mutant created by Transigen corporation, who is created from Logan’s DNA and possesses the same abilities.
They find that there are many other children like Laura that Transigen made and now want to kill because they are unable to control them.
Logan decides to help the children escape to the Canadian border, dying while helping them escape.
